The Brand & Product Lines

Ingrid & Isabel® is a female-founded apparel company that began with a problem and launched a solution. Newly pregnant and just barely showing, Founder and CEO Ingrid Carney experienced that universal moment that takes all expecting women by surprise – your pants no longer button. Pressed for time, she quickly fashioned what was to be the first Bellaband® prototype and confidently stepped out for a meeting. The Bellaband went on to disrupt the maternity market in a way that continues to resonate and thrive today – make more of your existing wardrobe and invest in quality maternity essentials that carry you through all stages of pregnancy and postpartum.

Since the Bellaband launched in 2003, the brand has evolved into high quality maternity fashion, must-have after-pregnancy pieces, and Cool Mom™ post-birth healing essentials. Collectively, Ingrid & Isabel has earned over 20 patents and is the largest US maternity brand with lines Ingrid & Isabel, Everyday Maternity, and For Every Belly™.

Based in San Francisco, CA and still privately owned, Ingrid leads a passionate and highly skilled team with expertise in market research, innovation, design & fit, production, and retail partnerships. Sublime fit and function are at the heart of every new piece, painstakingly crafted to support Mom in her journey. With over 20 years intimate knowledge of the space, we know Mom - we know maternity. We will continue to lead the market and raise the bar towards exceptional comfort and quality that is accessible to everyone.

Ingrid & Isabel® brand is proud to offer 3 product lines that together reach more women, across various online platforms and retail corners of the maternity market.

Our Product

We put a lot of care into the design and technical details of our clothes because a proper fit is essential to comfort and functionalty. Designing maternity isn't about making larger sizes, it's knowing where your body changes and where it doesn't. We conduct numerous fittings with pregnant AND non-pregnant women to maximize the versatility of each style. Ingrid & Isabel maternity and postpartum styles are made to fit as you progress. For sizing information on a specific item, simply select "size guide" on that product's page and refer to the size chart and guidance on measuring your body. You can also refer to the product's "fit notes" for model measurements. Still unsure? Chat one-on-one with an in-house fit specialist. Email us at customercare@ingridandisabel.com and we'll set it up!

Even though pregnancy is temporary, the best maternity clothes are made with high quality materials that feel great and hold up to repeated wear. We only use fabrics that have ample stretch and recovery, are soft and smooth against sometimes sensitive skin, and come with easy wear and care. We look for high performance blends that are breathable, buttery soft, and offer gentle support on-the-go. Your favorite maternity pieces will make you look and feel your best every time you put them on.

Your maternity and postpartum wardrobe should be easy and fuss-free so that you can focus on yourself and preparing for babe. Most of Ingrid & Isabel's fabrics are machine wash and dry. A cool to warm iron takes care of loose wrinkles.

The Bellaband is a soft and stretchy, seamless maternity band that holds up and conceales un-buttoned or too-loose jeans and pants. In early pregnancy, the Bellaband is often the first maternity purchase you'll make. It sits over the top waistband, smoothing and holding your pants securely in place - even as your belly grows and you can no longer button or zip. Wear folded over for extra hold under the belly, or up and over in a single layer on a fuller belly. As an accessory, the Bellaband makes getting dressed each day a breeze and allows you to transition into a maternity wardrobe gradually. After pregnancy, it once again becomes indespensible in transitioning you out of your maternity bottoms and back into your favorite non-maternity denim. The Bellaband is the perfect gift for yourself or your favorite new Mama.

What Should I Wear?

Building a maternity wardrobe can be both exciting and overwhelming. Begin with a comfort mindset. Your body will be changing day to day - sometimes even hour to hour.Start with a Bellaband - the maternity accessory that gives you extra time in your most-loved non-maternity denim, pants, and shorts. Select maternity pieces that make you feel good, unbothered, and are easy to pair with favorite items in your closet. Invest in leggings and a few tanks or tees with stretch. Choose colors that compliment your existing button down tops and favorite roomy sweaters. You won't need too much in the beginning. If your breasts already feel swollen or tender, choose a few new bras that can double as nursing bras later if you need them to. Crossover designs are great for growing or fluctuating cup sizes. Dressing in the first trimester should center around what feels good to you and makes you feel confident and beautiful.

The pregnancy and postpartum accessory market is full of products that are designed to help solve a problem or reduce pregnancy and postpartum related back and pelvic pain. Depending on the circumstance, a maternity band or belt may be useful in getting past temporary discomfort by providing gentle targeted compression, belly support, redistribution of belly weight, or improved circulation. Always consult your doctor first to determine what is best for you.

A Maternity Belly Band - such as Ingrid & Isabel's Bellaband - is designed to bridge the gap between regular and maternity bottoms. It will extend the life of your existing wardrobe by allowing you to securely wear your favorite denim, unbuttoned. Folded, it also provides gentle support to a growing belly. Some women wear a belly band for a short period of time and others swear by one for their entire pregnancy.

Maternity Belts - such as Ingrid & Isabel's Support Belt - are made to be worn in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy when your bump feels heavy and your back needs a break. Positioned low and below the belly, a support belt will provide a gentle lift to the front and light support at the back. Adjustability is key to the perfect fit. Construction should be lightweight and profile slim for easy wear under tops.

A Postpartum Band - such as Ingrid & Isabel's Afterband - offers a little extra support and comfort to a soft recovering belly after baby arrives. Light compression shapes beneath clothing and helps re-engage core muscles. Look for a soft and stretchy seamless fabrication for a comfortable fit. (be sure to consult with your doctor before using a compression band.)

Postpartum Belt - a belt differs from a postpartum band in that it typically comes in a single or multi-piece wrap design. While compression is customizable, the silhouette may be thicker or more noticable under clothes. (be sure to consult with your doctor before using a compression band.)

Shopping for maternity clothes can be similar to how you've always shopped - by season, special occasion, or updating basic essentials. It can also be a different experience because it's often done as your pregnancy progresses, as your body changes and new needs arise. How and when you select maternity clothes is personal to you, but there are a few ways to approach it.

Shop your closet first - pull out pieces that have extra stretch, elastic waistbands, flowy drape. Favorite cardigans are workhorses and can be worn well into your pregnancy. Try using a Bellaband to get more time with your favorite jeans. Assessing what you already have will allow you to thoughtfully ease into maternity shopping.

Shopping by timester - This is a shop-as-you-go approach to building your maternity wardrobe. Basics like maternity leggings, seamless tanks, tees, and pregnancy belly bands are popular items when your bump just begins to show. Needs and wants in your second and third trimester will likely have evolved as you settle into your pregancy. Maternity pants, tops, jumpsuits, dresses, intimates, maternity active and outerwear will be necessary when your belly is full, seasons change, and special occasions (think baby showers, wedding season, or a pregnancy photoshoot!) arise.

Shopping for postpartum - It's difficult to imagine the period of time right after baby arrives. But it most definitely does and you'll need a few essential items to keep you feeling your best as you recover. Selecting nursing and/or pumping bras, postpartum leggings, or a postpartum band (Oh hello Afterband!) can be done ahead of time, in your last trimester. Planning ahead for these items will take the stress out of last-minute shopping later, leaving you with more time to rest and cuddle babe.

Whatever your preffered approach, remember to utilize those drop-down options in the navigation menu. Shopping by stage, product type, or category can save time and take the confusion out of a new experience. And have fun with it - a baby bump can be one of the best fashion accessories there is!

First Trimester
The Bellaband: The original maternity belly band that extends the life of your non-maternity pants and jeans.
Maternity Leggings: Worth buying maternity - you'll want to wear them daily. Ours are made with buttery-soft, stretch fabric that grows with you and won't irritate sensitive skin.
Maternity Tanks and Tees: They have a little more length and stretch than non-maternity tops, which means you'll get a proper fit and feel more comfortable.

Second Trimester
Maternity Pants and Maternity Shorts: Once your belly pops into a beautiful round bump, you'll want some maternity bottoms for the ease and comfort that they bring. Ingrid & Isabel's Ponte Pant is a favorite for work, play, and everything in between. Cozy joggers or wide leg styles pair well with a variety of tops for different looks.
Maternity denim can be an investment, but worth it for the tailored fits and belly panel options.
Maternity Tops: A classic button down shirt is sure to be your new best friend at this stage. The relaxed fit of a maternity button down will have you choosing more than one for your closet and will carry you through to the end.
Maternity Unitards: Similar to the button down shirt, a classic unitard works especially hard to create a handful of different outfits and is so comfortable - it feels like you aren't even trying.
Maternity Dress: Arguably the most fun you can have when shopping maternity. Choose from a variety of styles, lengths, and design details to express yourself and show off that bump.
Maternity Bra & Maternity Underwear: Depending on your comfort level at this stage, you may want to refresh your top drawer with maternity styles designed to accomodate a changing bust and growing bump. Choose a maternity bra that doubles as a nursing bra for the most flex out of your purchase. Ingrid & Isabel's Cooling Crossover Nursing Bra checks all of the boxes and keeps your feeling cool and comfortable.

Third Trimester
Maternity Jumpsuits: Most of what you choose in the second trimester will carry you through to the end and even into postpartum. But in the last few months, you may want to add a jumpsuit to your closet. The one-piece design gives your full belly plenty of room to be and looks incredibly cute in pregnancy. Look for one that can be dressed up with a jacket or blazer just as well as dressed down with a tank top and sneakers.

Fourth Trimester
The fourth trimester is generally known as the first 3 to 4 months after birth. Comfort and a sense of simplicity are crucial as you plan for this stage. Think of it as another form of self-care.
Postpartum Intimates: Bras and underwear take on highly functional roles in this stage. Before you deliver, consider whether you'll want nursing bras, pumping bras, bras that do both, or simply bras that help you feel secure and comfy. Investing in a few new bras in the third trimester will eliminate the stress of finding something quickly after baby arrives. Postpartum underwear typically look like a regular brief, but are designed to be gentle on soft or C-section bellies. Go for what feels good and and can securely hold a thin-to-thick pad in place.
Soft Pants and Leggings: Look for soft elastic or adjustable waistbands and buttery-soft fabrics that feel good to slip on. Bonus points for high-rise styles that work equally well in or out of the house. If you're looking for some support, postpartum leggings provide gentle compression to a recovering belly.
Loose & Versatile Tops: Nursing or not, tops should be selected for how easy they are to wear. This can be an oversized tee, a flowy button down shirt, or even a long and stretchy tank paired with an open cardigan. Consider length and fabric - you'll still have a small bump and hormone changes can often bring on a wide range of temperature swings. Skip over anything that's not soft to the touch for you and babe.

There's no need for an entirely new wardrobe to feel cute and confident while pregnant. Adding some new pieces that are versatile and pair well with what's already in your closet will help you sail through pregnancy on a thoughtful budget. Pulling it all together can come from buying new, shopping resale, borrowing or even renting. (We love Nuuly!)

Take a moment early in your pregnancy to consider what your style might be and then identify your go-to pieces that will get the most wear. These are items you might want to buy new and invest in. A good legging, maternity denim, or everywear pant style can be paired with any number of favorite tops, making these bottoms the MVP's of your closet. Must-have essentials like maternity underwear and maternity/nursing bras are also well worth an investment because of daily wear and also because you will still need them after baby arrives. Consider borrowing or renting the extras you may only need on occasion - dresses, special occasion tops, jumpsuits, and outerwear are all needed at some point, but most likely don't warrant a forever home in your closet.

An affordable approach takes a little bit of thoughtful planning, but will leave you feeling inspired and excited about getting dressed each day.

The moment of transition from your regular pants and jeans into maternity styles is different for everyone. First-time pregnancies tend to show later than second or third time bumps. If you are using a Bellaband to bridge the literal gap in jeans that no longer zip, you can hold onto your favorite denim longer. But you'll know when it's time simply based on the lack of comfort. Typically between weeks 12 and 16 you'll notice that non-maternity bottoms no longer feel good to wear. The fit will be noticaby changed in the waist and even in the legs. This is your cue to move into styles with more stretch, elastic waistbands and/or a maternity belly panel. Ingrid & Isabel's maternity bottoms are expertly designed and fit on real pregnant fit models. We don't simply size up, we tailor the fit to the ways in which pregnancy shapes the body. Stepping into maternity pants specifically made for pregnancy will leave you feeling understood and relieved in a completely new way.

Choosing what to wear to your maternity photoshoot is a very important consideration; how you feel in your clothes will come through in your photos. Choose looks that use breathable fabrics and have plenty of stretch. Select something that feels special, but also very much like yourself. Radiating beauty and confidence translates into an authentic and timeless maternity shoot.

Maxi dresses often have enough fabric to create gorgeous flow and movement, a great option if you are looking at a breezy outdoor or natural setting. A bodycon silhouette is a great choice for highlighting your beautiful new shape. A form-fitting knit dress in your favorite color is soft, comfortable, and bump-proud. Separates are also perfectly appropriate and give you the flexibility to show off your bump. Lean into solids, neutral, and soft colors, avoiding busy prints or patterns. This allows you to be the focus and keeps your images feeling relevant for years to come.

The best time to take maternity photos is - whenver you want. Some mamas choose to wait until the third trimester to capture a full belly. Others want to document their bodies along the way with multiple micro-shoots. The best pregnancy photos are uncomplicated and reflective of this time in your life. Relax and let yourself be the center of attention because very soon, you'll be the one on the other side of the camera most of the time.

The list we imagine for our hospital bag is almost always longer than it needs to be. The reality is that most of what you need will be provided for you. Hospitals and birthing centers will offer you the essentials, like gowns, non-slip socks, and the most bizzare mesh underwear that you never knew you'd love . Feel free to augment the basics with a few things that make you most comfortable and feeling like yourself.

A Robe - A light to mid-weight robe is both comforting and functional. Perfect for skin-to-skin contact with babe, frequent feedings, and modestly for short walks down the hall. Some Socks - Even if you're someone who prefers bare feet, you'll want to bring some extra socks of your own. Choose socks with non-slip silicone dots or strips along the bottom for extra stability. Bonus points if really cute, extra soft, and a little thick - hospitals can be a little chilly.

The PJ's - You might be living in these until you head home, so think about functionality and comfort over what might look most fashionable. Button down PJ tops make for easy nursing access. Soft and comfortable tanks stack well under that robe. PJ bottoms should come with a very forgiving waistband that's both stretchy and soft to your recovering belly. If anticipating a c-section, look for a high-waisted option. Much of your time with be spent with babe or being checked by your attentive nurses - comfort and accessibility are a must.

An Extra Layer - Your favorite cardigan or oversized sweater can be helpful in keeping you cozy while you rest and snuggle babe. Nursing Bras - If you are planning to breastfeed, pack a few nursing bras in your hospital bag. Do your homework ahead of time to choose the style of bra you like. Wear it and get comfortable with the functionality of the cups. Slipping it on after birth will feel comfortable and familiar.

The Real Clothes - You may wish to stay in those PJ's forever, and that's perfectly okay. Or you might be anxious to get back into some real clothes. Either way, just know that you will only need a couple of outfit changes. Your bump will get smaller post-birth, but your belly takes weeks to shrink to a size comfortable in non-maternity clothes. Pack your favorite maternity leggings, boxy tees, and loose comfortable bottoms.

Just when you have the maternity wardrobe down, you need to start thinking about postpartum essentials. Thankfully, there's only a few things that truly qualify as must-have postpartum clothing. Just like during pregnancy, postpartum - the period just after baby arrives - calls for comfort and ease. The best postpartum essentials are highly functional and support the realities of mothering. When chosen thoughtfully, you won't need to compromise feeling cute and comfortable.

Nursing Bras - Just like regular bras, they come in a variety of styles, colors, cuts, and sizes. Try a few to find what you like, and then double down on them. Nursing and pumping can be messy business and leaks do happen. You'll want 5 to 6 bras to get you through a few days at a time to keep laundry managable.

Postpartum Leggings - Often undervalued, until you try them for the first time and realize they've earned a permanant place in your drawer, postpartum leggings might just be the postpartum recovery essential. Ingrid & Isabel postpartum leggings are crafted of buttery-soft stretch fabric, with a light compression belly panel that gives your recovering body the gentle support and reassurance it needs. You'll look great and feel even better.

Nursing Tops - If nursing or pumping on a regular schedule, you'll want some tops that offer quick access to babe or the pump - while still looking cute, casual, or polished. Button down shirts are our all-time favorites. Extremely vertatile and readily available. The boxy tees you wore when pregnant come back for another round as nursing tops that handle an easy lift or half-tuck equally well. There are tops designed specifically with built-in nursing features. These are nice-to-have, but not must-have's. Start small and build up a postpartum collection that suits your lifestyle and routine.

Sooner than you think actually. Breast size and tenderness is often an early indicator of pregnancy. Later on, a pregnant bustline continues to change to prepare for babe. Don't suffer through this time with your existing bras if they no longer fit well. Look for maternity and nursing bras that will grow with you, have some stretch or adjustability to the band, straps, and cups, and made with breathable fabrics. It's perfectly okay to invest early in a nursing bra if it feels good during pregnancy.

A lot of time and care goes into building a maternity wardrobe. Chances are, most of what you loved to wear will still be in great shape after your pregnancy is over. You can share your must-have pieces with newly expecting mamas in a variety of ways.

Pass it Down - Sharing a treasure trove of clothes with friends and family is always fun and full of memories as you see them travel within your circles.

Donation - Consider donating to a local mom-centric charity or women's group. Quality maternity clothing is often very difficult to come by for these organizations and a donation is always appreciated.

Resale - The resale maternity market exists! We love this model of circularity so much that we've partnered with Treet to create Bump Swap - Ingrid & Isabel's platform for buying and selling gently used maternity clothing.
