Nips + Lips: Multi-Use Nipple Balm for Nursing

While nursing can be an extremely intimate and rewarding experience, it can definitely cause some unwanted discomfort. If you’ve breastfed before, you know it’s not all sunshine and rainbows (sorry, just trying to keep it real here). This is especially true in the beginning...who knew that tiny little angel of yours could cause so much pain?!

But that doesn’t mean you can’t be in control. Treating your problem areas before, during, and after nursing can get you some much-needed relief and make the experience better overall. Like everything, prevention is always better than cure and it’s easier than trying to backpedal and fix after the fact. If you suspect that babe is having trouble latching, get yourself a LC and stay ahead of it. And let us tell ya about our secret to soothing those nursing nips...

One of our favorite nursing mama hacks is incorporating a good nipple balm. We know it’s pretty self explanatory what we love using it for, but what’s not obvious is all the other great benefits you get from using a nipple balm. Not only can it be used for nursing and pumping, nipple balms also come in handy to soothe other areas too. Keep reading to learn how you can use the soothing formula from head to toe, before babe and after!

the balm

Wondering which nipple balm is best? We've got just the thing... Introducing The Balm, our very first skincare essential for breastfeeding moms. This product is two years in the making since we really took our time making sure it is The. Balm...the only formula you need for nursing and beyond!

Since we love a good multi-tasker, the formula is much more than nipple care. It’s more like a multi-use salve, because we need to save as much time as possible with products that truly do it all!

why do I need a nipple balm?

You technically could go without one...but that might be a little painful! Incorporating The Balm before and after feedings will give your nips the relief they need while staying safe for babe. We also recommend using it towards the end of pregnancy to help with swollen breasts and tender nipples. Our formula is all-organic and lanolin-free so you can feel good about putting it on your body and some of it getting in babe’s mouth. We like to keep things pure, simple, and stress-free.

Keeping a nipple balm on hand wherever you’re nursing (which is everywhere!), or even where you’re not is super helpful. The Balm is truly Mom’s ‘Lil Helper, and definitely a diaper bag staple! You never want to be in a situation where you are in pain in public without relief. Been there, done that.

what should i look for?

In our opinion, what’s not in the formula is just as important as what is, especially when you’re pregnant or nursing. You’ll never find any parabens, lanolin, gluten, or soy in any of our skincare formulas. Plus all products are Leaping Bunny Certified because we love our fur babies just as much as our human ones!

We tapped into natural ingredient experts (who also happen to know the ins and outs of mama body care) to create this custom, all-organic blend for maximum comfort. We’re so proud of this formulation because it’s infused with only ingredients you probably already know, or maybe even drizzled on your salad today (shoutout to EVOO!). And since we like to take a thoughtful approach, every ingredient is there for a reason. Let’s dive deeper into the benefits of these skincare superheroes!

5 ingredients. 1 bottle.

Extra virgin olive oil is not only a staple in your pantry, it actually has some pretty incredible benefits for your skin and hair! Olive oil is a nutrient-packed oil made from pressing olives to extract their oil (so like a dirty martini for your skin!). It is rich in vitamins and antioxidants and has been linked to improved skin moisturization, help with anti-aging, and overall skin relief. It’s also been known to help boost collagen production! Overall, olive oil helps to moisturize your dry skin and soothe cracked nipples–that’s why we chose to put it in this jar of organic goodness.

Marshmallow root is not what you make s’mores with, it’s actually a powerful perennial herb that has a ton of benefits! Fun fact, it comes from the Althea plant native to Northern Africa, Europe, and Western Asia and has been used in folk medicine for a long time. So you know it’s good. It has anti-inflammatory properties, helps relieve irritation, and soothes skin. Check, check, annnnd check! We also put this guy in our belly oil for the very same reasons.

Now you may not be as familiar with calendula, but you may know it as marigold! Flowers are actually known for containing important nutrients and skin-healing properties. For skincare purposes, what’s actually in the formula is calendula oil. This oil is extracted from the petals, stems, and seeds of the marigold. Once infused into skincare products like The Oil and The Balm, it helps soften skin and calm irritation. Calendula is known for its anti-inflammatory properties too, and it’s chock full of antioxidants.

Shea nut butter, which you have definitely heard of, and beeswax are nature’s emollients (which give it a rich texture) that help hydrate and calm uncomfortably irritated skin. The best shea butter benefits include moisturizing dry skin, reducing inflammation, helping restore skin elasticity, and SO. MUCH. MORE. Beeswax draws moisture into the skin and locks it in. Plus it’s got antibacterial properties which is key for cracked skin.

what should i avoid?

There are a few things you should avoid in all of your skincare products during pregnancy and while you’re breastfeeding. We recommend using clean formulas with no added “bad stuff.” By that, we mean parabens, lanolin, gluten, petroleum, soy, and more. Rule of thumb: if you can’t pronounce it, you probably shouldn’t be using it (check out our pregnancy-safe ingredient glossary for more!). When you see fewer ingredients on a label, that’s a great sign (creating simple things is actually really hard). The Balm is formulated with only 5 ingredients that are all organic and 100% safe for you and babe.

how to use

The Balm can be applied directly to nipples to help rescue them from dryness, soreness, and cracked skin. You can also use this as a multi-purpose salve for lips, elbows, knees, heels, and more! So even after you’re done nursing, you can still use this nourishing formula in your everyday life. To apply, take as little or as much as you need and apply to areas of discomfort. No need to wash it off before nursing. You can also use it as a pump lubricant. It really is a miracle worker!

In conclusion...

Your body has gone through a lot, now it’s time to treat yourself (and your nips) to a super-soothing sigh of relief! The Balm is your new go-to for sore, damaged skin. Plus we’re suckers for packaging and she is so chic and cute–not biased at all! The Balm makes a great gift (just saying...). Check out our full lineup of wellness products for more!
